Which UMF Mānuka Honey Should You Buy? 5+, 10+, 15+ or 20+

Mānuka honey comes in grades, and the right one depends on how you'll use it, the flavour you like and your budget. This guide compares the most common UMF™ grades so you can choose with confidence. (New to the numbers? Start with UMF vs MGO explained.)

The grades at a glance

Grade Min. MGO Taste Best for
UMF 5+ 83+ Light, gentle Everyday use, first-timers, families
UMF 10+ 263+ Richer, more Mānuka character A daily spoonful
UMF 15+ 514+ Bold and earthy People who want a stronger honey
UMF 20+ 829+ Intense, complex Connoisseurs and premium gifts

UMF 5+: the everyday starter

UMF 5+ is a lovely introduction to Mānuka. It's mild enough for toast, porridge, smoothies and warm drinks, and it's the most affordable way to enjoy genuine UMF™ certified Mānuka every day. Shop Discovery Range UMF 5+.

UMF 10+: the daily ritual

UMF 10+ is where many regular Mānuka lovers settle. It has noticeably more of that distinctive Mānuka depth, and many people enjoy a teaspoon a day as part of their morning routine. Shop Discovery Range UMF 10+.

UMF 15+: stronger and richer

UMF 15+ has a bold, earthy flavour and a higher concentration of MGO. It suits people who want a stronger honey, especially through winter. Shop Discovery Range UMF 15+.

UMF 20+: rare and special

Only a small share of Mānuka honey reaches UMF 20+. It's intense and complex, and harvested in small batches, so it's often chosen as a premium gift or savoured slowly. Our Brothers Selection UMF 20+ is harvested each summer from remote Taranaki hive sites.

Three questions to help you choose

  1. How often will you use it? Daily use in food and drinks suits UMF 5+ or 10+. Occasional use can justify a higher grade.
  2. Do you like strong flavours? Higher grades taste bolder and less sweet. If you prefer a mild honey, start lower.
  3. Is it a gift? UMF 15+ and 20+ make memorable gifts, especially for someone who already loves Mānuka.

Looking for something milder and better value?

Our Mānuka Multiflora (MGO 40+ and 60+) and native Bush Multiflora are great for cooking, baking and sweetening tea.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mānuka honey expire?

Honey keeps for a very long time when stored sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Check the best-before date on your jar.

Why does Mānuka honey cost more than regular honey?

Mānuka only grows in certain areas and flowers for a few weeks each year. Higher grades are rarer still, and UMF™ certification involves independent laboratory testing of every batch.

Is Hidden Honey UMF™ certified?

Yes. Hidden Honey holds UMF™ licence #3096 with the UMF Honey Association.
