How to use

Mānuka honey is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. It only comes from New Zealand and is made from the nectar bees collect from the flowers of the native Mānuka bush.

Mānuka honey has a much higher level of enzymes than regular honey, and three chemical compounds give it healing properties:

Methylglyoxal

Also known as MGO, this gives mānuka honey its unique antibacterial properties.

Leptosperin

Found in Mānuka nectar, eptosperin helps differentiate mānuka from other types of honey.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)

The DHA compound is found in the nectar of the mānuka flower and is converted to MGO when it is turned into honey.

For centuries cultures around the world have used honey to support health and well-being. The earliest known use for honey as a medicinal prescription is found in Sumerian clay tablets that may be almost 4000 years old.

But what makes Manuka honey superior when it comes to supporting healing and general well-being?

Mānuka honey is exclusive to New Zealand. It is sourced from the native Mānuka plant. The Mānuka plant has been used in healing practices for hundreds of years by Māori

The enhanced medicinal benefits of Mānuka honey were discovered by scientists in 1981. They found it contained considerably higher levels of enzymes than regular honey and the active agent methylglyoxal (MGO). The enzymes create a natural hydrogen peroxide that works as an antibacterial. The higher the MGO present in the Mānuka honey, the more potent it is.

How Mānuka honey is used to support health and well-being today

Not only does Mānuka honey contain antibacterial properties, but it is also full of minerals, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus and trace elements of iron, zinc and selenium.

For general health and well-being, try a teaspoon (10g) of UMF10+ per day. If you’re looking to boost your energy during the winter months, choose a higher UMF level, such as 15+, with a greater concentration of MGO. You can also apply Mānuka honey to cleanse your skin and use it as a sustainable source of energy if you’re exercising.

What is the difference between MGO and UMFTM?

MGO stands for Methylglyoxal - this is an active compound that is only available in mānuka honey and is what makes it so unique. The higher the MGO number - the higher the potency of MGO available in the honey.

UMF ™ stands for Unique Manuka Factor. It is the most comprehensive, independently certified and internationally recognised quality assurance system for New Zealand mānuka honey.

The UMF™ system is designed to validate mānuka honey potency, authenticity, purity, shelf life and freshness for honey producers, brands, customers and consumers around the world.

UMF™ measures four factors:

Methylglyoxal (MGO) – as mentioned above, is a key potency measure for New Zealand mānuka honey.

Leptosperin – unique to mānuka honey, created in nature and unable to be added to honey.

DHA – this converts to MGO over time. In correct amounts, it ensures that the MGO levels will remain as tested throughout the life of the product.

HMF – indicates whether honey has been overheated or stored for too long, which can reduce shelf life and potency.
